Whitney Houston and Dana Bash
Whitney Elizabeth Houston was conceived in a musical family on 9 August 1993 in Newark New Jersey. Whitney is a cousin and daughter to the singing sensation Dionne. In her early years she was a singer in the New Hope Baptist Church choir in Newark. When she was fifteen, Houston was singing professionally backing vocals with her mother on Chaka Khan's hit song in 1978 Im Every Woman. In 1981, she briefly did a stint as a fashion model, and was featured on the Seventeen album cover. She also performed backing vocals to Lou Rawls and Jermaine. Beginning in 1981, she started to work as a vocalist with the New York-based funk group Material. It was her high-quality vocal performance of this group that attracted notice of major record companies such as Arista. In 1985, the debut of Whitney Houston turned out to be the best-selling debut album ever. On the album, she came out with several hits such as Saving All My Love for You How Do You Know You Give Good Love And The More Love of All. This helped her achieve seven US Number Ones consecutively. The singer beat the Beatles. The album sold three million copies in its initial year in the US and then went on to sell 25 million worldwide winning them the first six Grammies. The album that followed it in 1987 Whitney that included hits Where Do Broken Hearts Go and I Wanna Dance With Somebody built on her success but it was the 1992 film The Bodyguard (1992) that sealed her place as one of the top-selling performers ever. Even though the movie and actor's performance weren't much praised, her soundtrack album that featured her interpretation of Dolly Parton's I Will Always Love You was her top single and album for several months. It sold more than 44 million copies across the globe. The same year that she welcomed her daughter Bobbi she married Bobby Brown of the ex-New Edition group. It was about this time when her well-documented substance abuse began. By 1996 she was a daily user.
